Frequently asked questions

WHAT IS ANAPLASTOLOGY?

Anaplastology is an allied health service dealing with the prosthetic rehabilitation of an absent, disfigured, or malformed anatomically critical location of the face or body.  More about clinical anaplastology

HOW IS THE PROSTHEsis FITTED?

A prosthesis is made over a series of outpatient appointments that range between 1/2 and 3 hours. These appointments include an initial consultation to discuss your options and treatment plan, impression taking and sculpting sessions, prototype fitting, intrinsic and extrinsic colouring, final fitting and instruction session.

HOW IS THE PROSTHesis ATTACHED?

A prosthesis is applied and removed daily to keep tissues healthy and happy. There are different methods of attachment and we determine the right one for you based on assessment after the first consultation. Options include skin adhesives, bone anchored implants, using existing anatomy to anchor the prosthetic, attachment to spectacles, or passive vacuum.

WHAT ARE BONE ANCHORED IMPLANTS?

Bone anchored implants (or osseointegration) involves titanium implants surgically placed into the bone. After a healing period the prosthetic is engineered to interface with these implants via magnets or clips resulting in a snap-on/snap-off type of prosthesis. This type of retention involves a multidisciplinary team approach involving collaboration between surgeons, anaplastologsts, and supporting health care staff. Contact us to find out more.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Cost varies and is dependent on the size, type of prosthesis, and method of attachment. Public and private patients have different levels of cover. Just get in touch to chat through your options.

HOW LONG WILL A PROSTHEsis LAST?

The life of a prosthesis is dependent on how it is used, stored and cared for. The location and materials of the prosthesis, and whether anatomy undergoes any changes (i.e. healing or further surgery) will also factor into lifespan. Generally a prosthesis will last between 18 months and three years and on many occasions for longer. We guarantee out prostheses for 12 months.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT AFTER SURGERY OR RADIATION ?

We can start making your prosthesis once full healing has occurred and all swelling has subsided. Your treating doctor can let us know when you are ready.  Get in touch to talk through your particular experience.
